15 BEFORE 2015 challenge!

I had started this a few weeks ago, and got overwhelmed by the busy Christmas Fairs period... and now I have only 3 weeks left AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Thankfully, I can already tick some off the list!

Following in the footsteps of a good friend and brilliant artist Amélie Gagné http://www.ameliegagnestudio.com I am taking on the challenge to fulfill these 15 goals before the end of the year!

1. Have a most enjoyable time and profitable experience at the Christmas Fairs, including the Macroom Christmas Market, The Boherbue Christmas fair, The Wine and Art at the Malton Killarney and the Christmas craft and food fair at the Outlet Killarney.

2. Put my feet up for a couple of days after the fairs are over :)

3. Branding, branding, branding: work on having a clear strategy for branding in 2015, including a company image and story, a list of products new ones, ones that will stay and ones that will have to go!

4. Do some local advertising, get known in my own county!

5. Have a detailed year planning for 2015

6. Design my new studio
Yeah! I wish!!

7. Secure more retailers for my prints of Ireland

8. Had a few more paintings from outside the Ring of Kerry to my collection of paintings for prints.

                                                         9. Make some delicious sweet treats for the holiday season

10. Create a festive, magical atmosphere in our beautiful home for my two little elves who have done so well while I was so busy everyday.

11. Spend some relaxing, quality time with my other half.

12. Refocus on speaking my native French to my children. With the hectic schedule, I have let it slipped and I can see the difference with  my daughter already.

13. Do a massive clean up of the house... I won't say how long since I've mopped a floor... shameful!

14. Treat myself to something... not sure what yet, but gotta look after no1 ;)

15. Have fun, being with my family, at work, in my studio, enjoy every moment!

Still fresh... and coming along nicely.

Already planning ahead for next summer season, I am working on some new paintings of Ireland...

Sunday 31 August 2014

What's been going on with the furniture upcycling...

This was a lovely project of re-upholstery, a beautiful chair and an amazingly suited fabric considering our limited resources...

And this is my own little project with yet another chest of drawer , I have added the opening top and I am now making separations inside the top part which will be all upholstered...

The countdown is on already!!

I have been busy, and it's only the start of it, hopefully! With sales reaching 150 prints for this first summer season and talks of more shops for next year, I am overwhelmed and delighted with how things are going. So more Irish painting will be needed between now and next April, but for the next couple of months, my attention turns to preparing for the Christmas fairs.
I will have these little hand painted memory games for children. They contain 12 painted wooden pieces, making 6 pairs that can be placed upside down and then matched by one or more small players! The game comes in a little wooden box, easy to travel with and kids love little containers they can open and find the treasures within them...

And my miniature oil paintings hanging decorations are back as well, here are a few of the quirky ones, ideal for first Christmas keepsakes...

A LOT MORE TO COME SOON...

News from the furniture workshops!

I have to hand it to our great teacher Noel, in a matter of hours, with a few 3x2 and off-cuts of chipboard guided us in making this luxurious Chaise longue from scratch...

And now I have to hand it to myself, this was a chair going to waste, took the back off and we chopped in 2 halves, put an extension in the middle, upholstered it and added a piece of weaving underneath: And here we have it: a beautiful beach house style bench. That's what I call Upcycling taken to another level!

And I can't take any credit for this one, but I thought it to be very interesting: made out of old pallets, this garden creation is deserving of the title Designer chair!

It's taking shape...

This was a old and cheap chest of drawer, which had seen better days... and then it was painted this purple. Don't get me wrong, I love purple, but it doesn't quite suit everything!! So I took it's top off, upholstered it, gave it arms and a deep buttoned back...
I must still put the outside arms and back and fit some handles...
Finished product next week and it will hopefully find it's way into my little girl's room. She'll love it!!!

My new project with an old chest of drawers

I found in our workshop an old (not antique!), unimpressive, chest of drawer that had had the misfortune of having been painted a very violent purple... I thought to myself: I have got to do something to rescue this thing! Here are a few of my inspirations:

I shall have pics of my own attempts very soon!

Sunday 6 April 2014

Squeezing in some creative time in daily routine!

It is a beautiful sunny Sunday, sacred time in my books, not because it's Sunday but because it's the only day we are all together as a family. But today I had to steal an hour to catch up on some painting and it got me thinking about how difficult it can be to squeeze in creative time with a young family, a part time job and the other excuses that creep in now and again, and again, and again!

I am lucky that the 3 days I spend working outside the home are filled with manual and somewhat creative work, with constant new projects to keep me motivated. Those days, once the children are in bed and asleep, I normally don't have the energy left to retire to the studio to face a couple of hours painting, so I retire to the sofa with my sketchbook at my side, sometimes not even opening it, sometimes filling a few pages of just about anything.
A confession, I am not good from 8 pm onward, 7h30 is for a walk, pilates or other such activities, and then what is the most tempting is my sofa and blanket. It has to be fought bravely, and some days I am victorious, others, I succumb to temptation!
I have tried bringing the eldest (3) in the studio while the youngest is having a snooze, but that only ever resulted in an interrupted half hour. I get two hours on Fridays, when I finish work early, and I count the days to the next bank holiday which I can claim as mine in it's entirety!
But days are getting longer, evenings brighter and I have to give up Coronation street ;)

There is only one conclusion, if you really want to, you can do it, no more excuses!

Oil painting Demo, Part 1

I am certainly no expert, but I have work out a few things in the years I have been painting and if any tips can help any aspiring artist out there, well it's worth putting it to screen...

This will be a brief step by step demo, not really a proper tutorial, I may get to that in the future, but here goes Part 1:

If you will paint on canvas, choose good canvas and check they are not warped before buying them. Since most of my paintings now will be made for prints, I work on canvas boards which are less expensive and very easy to carry around (if you're painting on locations outside, or in my case different locations within my house!)

Canvas boards are primed already, so there isn't much need to prime them once more. So I just paint the board with an acrylic wash (acrylic paint and water, dilute to desired color). I find that vibrant colors work particularly well, they make the subsequent colors "pop-out" as it were. It can be reds, ocres, and for landscapes especially; purple tones will add to the finish piece.

This will not, or barely be seen, so very little attention need to be paid to the application, so long as all the canvas is covered.

I have used primer only before, but without a background color, you risk to have white canvas exposed in places once you've painted with oils, it can be hard to neatly cover the whole surface if you are not working a strictly build-up technique or layered technique*. In short, I like to paint more instinctively (and probably more quickly) than a layering technique allows, with the background covered, no need to worry.

I have also used an oil "wash" (diluted pigments with oil), but it just doesn't work as well and takes a longer drying time...
The acrylic wash will dry within a half hour, depending how much water is involved, so you are soon ready to sketch. I also like to have a couple of projects lined up, so I can paint a few backgrounds while I have the acrylics out!
I will then sketch, again with acrylics, inconspicuous colors, either in same tones as the background, or same tones as the picture to paint.

I only make a very basic sketch here, where the main elements will be located, etc.
It also helps to preview the composition, as I often work from several photos for the one painting, rather than one picture showing a satisfactory composition. If you are a beginner, I think composition is one of the hardest thing to get right, so my suggestion would be to use only the one photo which has great composition already...

Hopefully it'll not be weeks now until I get around to Part 2  :o)

*There are a lot of information online, including on youtube, about the different oil painting techniques, and the layering technique, if you are interested you may google it, or this site I found had some good info:
